Kibbutz Or HaNer

Founded by South American pioneers on the grounds of antiquity, this vibrant kibbutz radiates a distinct Argentinian and Chilean flair, where the quiet industry of its world-class rivet factory meets a storied landscape rooted in Talmudic history. Though the shadows of October 7 brought the front lines to its doorstep, the "Light of the Candle" continues to burn bright as the community channels its deep-seated resilience into a determined effort to rebuild and sustain its peaceful way of life.

The Luminous Heart of the Western Negev

From South American Roots to a Modern Beacon of Resilience

Or HaNer, whose name translates to "Light of the Candle," is a unique cultural outpost in southern Israel, famously established by pioneers from Argentina and Chile. This South American heritage remains the kibbutz's heartbeat, reflected in its warm community atmosphere and its evolution from a 1950s farm into a hub of modern industry, most notably home to the Ornit factory. Situated near Sderot, the kibbutz sits on a landscape rich with history, where 4th-century Greek inscriptions meet the modern-day "Gordoniya" spirit, creating a space that feels both deeply rooted in the ancient past and vibrantly connected to the global present.

The tranquility of this "light in the desert" was fundamentally challenged on October 7, 2023, as the kibbutz found itself on the front lines of the unprecedented attacks from Gaza. In the wake of that dark day, the community has had to navigate the complexities of evacuation and the profound psychological weight of the conflict, yet the spirit of the "Candle" has proven difficult to extinguish. Today, Or HaNer stands as a symbol of the Western Negev’s enduring strength, as its residents work to transform the trauma of the attacks into a renewed commitment to their land and the preservation of their distinctive, cross-continental way of life.
