Kibbutz Yad Mordechai

Named in honor of the leader of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Kibbutz Yad Mordechai is a legendary symbol of Jewish resistance where 1,000 residents maintain a legacy of bravery that stretches from the 1948 Battle of Yad Mordechai to its modern "From Holocaust to Revival" museum. During the morning of October 7, the kibbutz's local security team and Israeli police units engaged in a fierce, decisive firefight at the main gate that successfully repelled a massive squad of militants, saving the community from the massacres seen in neighboring villages; your partnership is vital to helping this historic bastion of defiance preserve its heritage and secure the future of its families on the southern frontier.

The Fortress of the South

From the Warsaw Ghetto to the Negev Sands

Kibbutz Yad Mordechai is perhaps the most famous symbol of the "Holocaust to Revival" narrative in Israel. Founded by Polish pioneers of the Hashomer Hatzair movement, the kibbutz was renamed to honor Mordechai Anielewicz, the commander who led the Jewish Fighting Organization against the Nazis in 1943. The iconic statue of Anielewicz, standing defiantly with a grenade beside the skeletal remains of the water tower destroyed by Egyptian forces in 1948, serves as a pilgrimage site for those seeking to understand the Israeli spirit of "Never Again."

On October 7, 2023, that spirit of resistance was called upon once more. A group of approximately 20-30 terrorists arrived at the kibbutz entrance on motorcycles and in vans, attempting to breach the perimeter. In a display of tactical coordination, the local civilian security squad and a small contingent of Israeli police officers ambushed the attackers, engaging in a high-stakes shootout that lasted for hours and ultimately forced the militants to retreat. While Yad Mordechai was spared a massacre, the community has faced a grueling year of displacement and the ongoing economic impact of a halted tourism and agricultural sector. Twinning with or donating to Yad Mordechai today supports the preservation of its world-class museum, the fortification of its security systems, and the psychological recovery of a community that continues to stand as a shield for the nation.
