Moshav Sde Nitzan

Founded in 1973 by Anglophone pioneers and named in honor of the philanthropist Bloomfield, this "Field of Buds" remains a distinctive agricultural moshav where English-speaking roots meet the rugged beauty of the northern Negev. While the community’s tranquil rows of greenhouses were shaken by the proximity of the October 7 attacks, the moshav has emerged as a symbol of regional grit, with residents and international workers alike laboring to sustain the desert's vital harvest amidst the shadow of conflict.

The Negev’s Anglo-Agricultural Pioneer

From English-Speaking Roots to Desert Resilience

Nestled in the sun-drenched expanse of the northern Negev, Sde Nitzan—literally "Field of Buds"—stands as a unique cultural and agricultural landmark established in 1973 by immigrants from English-speaking countries. Originally envisioned as a tribute to the philanthropist Bloomfield, the moshav transformed a patch of arid desert into a thriving cooperative community twelve kilometers east of Kerem Shalom. Today, it remains a place where Hebrew is seasoned with English accents and where the landscape is defined by vast rows of greenhouses producing the "buds" of its namesake, maintaining a legacy of pioneering spirit that has bridged the gap between Western heritage and Israeli desert farming for over five decades.

The tranquility of this agricultural haven was abruptly shattered on October 7, 2023, when the moshav found itself on the front lines of the Hamas-led attacks due to its proximity to the Gaza Strip. While the community faced the immediate terror of infiltration attempts and heavy rocket fire, the aftermath presented a different kind of struggle: a critical agricultural crisis as foreign workers fled and fields were left untended. In the months since, Sde Nitzan has become a focal point of national volunteerism, as Israelis from across the country have flocked to the "Field of Buds" to help harvest crops, ensuring that the community’s spirit and its vital contribution to the nation’s food security remain unbroken despite the scars of conflict.
