Kibbutz Bror Hayil

Known as the "Brazilian Kibbutz," this vibrant community near Sderot blends deep Talmudic roots with South American flair, offering a unique cultural oasis where Portuguese is spoken and samba rhythms occasionally drift through the desert air. While the peace of this pastoral enclave was tested during the October 7 attacks, the kibbutz stood firm as a bastion of resilience, with its community spirit proving as enduring as the ancient history for which it is named.

The Samba Rhythm of the Negev

Where Ancient Judean History Meets Modern Brazilian Spirit

Bror Hayil stands as a unique cultural anomaly in the northern Negev, famously known as Israel’s "Brazilian kibbutz" due to the large influx of South American immigrants who have shaped its identity since the 1950s. While its roots stretch back to the Talmudic era—once home to the yeshiva of Rabbi Johanan ben Zakai—the modern village is defined by a vibrant fusion of Zionist ideals and Lusophone heritage. Visitors and residents alike experience a community where Hebrew and Portuguese mingle in the dining hall, and the arid landscape is softened by a shared passion for Brazilian music, cuisine, and a celebrated warmth that distinguishes it from its more traditional desert neighbors.

On October 7, 2023, this tranquil enclave was thrust into the front lines of the Hamas-led attacks, testing the legendary resilience of its tight-knit population. Situated in the "Gaza envelope" near Sderot, the kibbutz faced hours of intense peril as local security teams and residents mobilized to defend their homes against the sudden onslaught of violence that devastated nearby communities. In the aftermath, Bror Hayil has emerged as a symbol of the region’s endurance; despite the trauma and the temporary evacuation of many families, the community has remained steadfast in its commitment to the land, drawing on its deep-seated history and international bonds to begin the long process of healing and rebuilding.
