Kibbutz Gvar'am

Named for the heroism of a people and the resilience of a beacon, Kibbutz Gvar'am is a historic stronghold in the Hof Ashkelon region where a legacy of German pioneers and a spirit of shared community have flourished since the 1940s. While this "sycamore house" has long stood firm against the shadow of conflict, the unprecedented trauma of October 7 has left a deep mark on its 700 residents, calling for a new wave of global partnership to help fortify their defense and ensure this historic flame of the Negev never flickers.

The Heroism of the People

A Sanctuary of History and Resilience

Founded in 1942 by pioneers from the "Mahar" core group in Germany, Kibbutz Gvar'am—meaning "Heroism of the People"—was established as a symbolic response to the Holocaust and a strategic foothold in the southern frontier. Located just twelve kilometers from Ashkelon, the kibbutz has evolved from a pilot group living in tents to a thriving communal home known for its integration of secular and religious life and its scenic orchards. For decades, it has been a place of cultural exchange, famously hosting international volunteers like English actor Paul Kaye, and remains a vital pillar of the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council.

The peace of Gvar'am has frequently been tested by rocket fire, but the events of October 7, 2023, brought the reality of the border closer than ever, forcing the community to mobilize its local security and support systems to protect its families. Today, Gvar'am is focused on a journey of recovery, investing in the mental health of its children and the physical reinforcement of its perimeter to safeguard its future. By twinning with or donating to Gvar'am, you are not just supporting a town; you are honoring a 75-year legacy of courage and helping a historic "beacon" continue to shine in the face of adversity.
