Kibbutz Gvulot

Established in 1943 as the first modern Jewish settlement in the Gaza area, this historic "lookout" kibbutz is a cradle of desert agriculture where sandstone architecture and cultural history—including the early songwriting of Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon—meet the vast horizons of the northwestern Negev. While the community’s reinforced perimeter and proximity to the border made it a vital civilian anchor during the October 7 attacks, it has since emerged as a symbol of endurance, balancing its role as a frontline agricultural hub with a renewed commitment to securing the region’s future.

The Desert’s First Lookout

Resilience and Heritage on the Edge of the Negev

Kibbutz Gvulot occupies a legendary space in the history of Israeli settlement as the first of the three original "lookouts" established to test the viability of life in the arid northwestern Negev. Founded in 1943 by Romanian and Turkish immigrants, the village is defined by its striking "Hatzera" site—a fortress-like courtyard built of local sun-dried adobe bricks—and a legacy of cultural unexpectedness, famously serving as the creative backdrop where Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon penned some of the band's early hits. Today, the kibbutz remains a lush agricultural oasis 120 meters above sea level, balancing its pioneer roots with modern desert farming and ecological initiatives like its upcoming anaerobic waste plant.

On October 7, 2023, Gvulot’s proximity to the Gaza border placed it at the heart of a national tragedy, as the sounds of the nearby infiltration and the intensity of the rocket fire shattered the desert’s usual tranquility. While the kibbutz’s security teams worked frantically to defend their homes, the community became a vital node of civilian resilience in the Eshkol Regional Council, navigating the trauma of the attacks and the subsequent displacement of neighboring villages. In the months since, Gvulot has stood as a symbol of the "Borders" (the literal translation of its name), mourning the losses of the region while steadfastly maintaining its agricultural operations as an act of defiance and commitment to the land.
