Tzohar
Tzohar serves as the communal heart of the Hevel Eshkol region, a resilient desert settlement known for its diverse population of immigrants and its biblical namesake. While long-defined by its quiet agricultural surroundings, the community gained international recognition for the extraordinary bravery of its local security team, who successfully defended the town against a major infiltration attempt during the attacks of October 7.
The Communal Heart of Hevel Eshkol
From Biblical Roots to Modern-Day Resilience in Israel’s Southern Frontier
Founded in 1970 and named after the son of the biblical patriarch Simeon, Tzohar functions as a vital regional center for the agricultural communities of the Hevel Eshkol region. Originally established to provide services to neighboring villages, the settlement evolved into a diverse cultural mosaic during the 1990s as it welcomed waves of immigrants from Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union. Today, it remains a quiet but essential hub of 601 residents, characterized by its integration of varied backgrounds and its role as a stabilizing anchor for the rural southern landscape.
The quiet rhythm of life in Tzohar was forever changed on October 7, 2023, when the community became a focal point of intense heroism during the Hamas attacks. Despite being targeted by approximately 80 militants seeking to infiltrate the settlement, the town was saved by the extraordinary actions of a tiny, dedicated security team. Their successful defense prevented a major tragedy, leaving the community with a legacy of profound bravery that now sits alongside its history of immigrant absorption and regional service.
