Kibbutz Kerem Shalom

Set on the unique triple border where Israel meets Gaza and Egypt, this socialist-Zionist kibbutz was founded with the aspirational name "Vineyard of Peace" and remains a resilient outpost of communal living in the rugged Negev sands. During the October 7 attacks, the kibbutz's tiny civil defense team fought a desperate and heroic battle against dozens of infiltrators, successfully protecting their community at a heavy cost.

The Vineyard of Peace at the Desert Tripoint

A Portrait of Communal Resilience on the Triple Border

Established in 1967 by the socialist-Zionist youth movement Hashomer Hatzair, Kerem Shalom—meaning "Vineyard of Peace"—stands as a symbolic and literal gateway where the borders of Israel, Gaza, and Egypt converge. This small, secular kibbutz in the Eshkol Regional Council is defined by a deep sense of mutual responsibility, maintaining a tight-knit community that prioritizes shared education, culture, and economic support despite its proximity to one of the world’s most volatile frontiers. Over the decades, the kibbutz has weathered various challenges, from economic restructuring and population fluctuations to the constant threat of mortar fire, yet it has remained steadfast in its original mission: to shape a just, egalitarian society that determines the very borders of the state.

The tranquility implied by its name was shattered on October 7, 2023, when Kerem Shalom became a primary target during the Hamas-led incursions. In a testament to the kibbutz's "total mutual responsibility," a ten-person civil defense team engaged in a fierce, hours-long battle against approximately 20 attackers who had breached the perimeter. While the team successfully repelled the assault and prevented a larger massacre within the residential quarters, the victory came at a profound cost, with two members of the defense team losing their lives in the line of duty. This harrowing chapter has added a new layer of solemnity to the kibbutz’s history, cementing its reputation not just as a vineyard of peace, but as a bastion of extraordinary civilian bravery.
