Moshav Yevul
Rising from the north-western Negev dunes near the Egyptian border, Yevul is a resilient moshav defined by successive waves of pioneers, including 1981 evacuees from Sinai and former residents of Netzarim seeking a fresh start in the desert. The tranquility of this agricultural enclave was upended by the events of October 7, 2023, forcing its residents to evacuate to the Dead Sea where they now share a temporary home with survivors from neighboring Be'eri.
Seeds of Persistence in the Hevel Shalom
From Sinai Evacuation to Desert Sanctuary
Yevul, whose name aptly translates to "Crop," is a moshav that embodies the shifting geopolitical landscape and agricultural tenacity of the north-western Negev. Established in 1981 by pioneers evacuated from the Sinai Peninsula, the village has long served as a symbol of resettlement and new beginnings. Its population of roughly 440 residents is deeply rooted in the soil of the Hevel Shalom area, and its history is marked by a unique hospitality; in 2005, the community opened its doors to families displaced from Netzarim during the Gaza disengagement, further cementing Yevul’s identity as a sanctuary for those forced to rebuild their lives in the desert.
The quiet rhythm of this farming community was shattered by the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which turned the border region into a frontline. While the moshav has faced decades of proximity to conflict, the scale of the 2023 violence necessitated a total evacuation of its residents to ensure their safety. Today, the people of Yevul find themselves in a poignant state of shared displacement, residing in a hostel near the Dead Sea alongside survivors from the Be'eri massacre—a testament to the enduring communal bonds and the somber reality of a population waiting to return to their fields and homes.
