Kibbutz Kissufim

Perched on the desert edge at the historic Kissufim gate, this storied kibbutz was born from the "yearning" of American and South American pioneers to build a life of agriculture and cinematic inspiration in the northwestern Negev. Though the devastating massacre of October 7 left the community temporarily displaced and homes in ruin, a brave vanguard has already returned to open the local kindergarten and clear the way for a multi-million dollar rebuilding project that invites your partnership to restore this vital frontier sanctuary.

A Yearning for the Land

From Cinematic Inspiration to Southern Sentinel

Founded in 1951 by idealistic Zionist youth from the United States and South America, Kissufim—meaning "Yearning"—is a community defined by its deep cultural roots and its strategic role as a guardian of Israel’s southern border. This unique kibbutz gained international fame as the setting for the cult classic film Operation Grandma and the recent award-winning drama Kissufim, reflecting a life of humor and resilience in the face of constant frontier challenges. Beyond the screen, Kissufim serves as a critical humanitarian artery, where the local gate has long facilitated the transfer of aid, embodying a complex but steadfast commitment to the region.

The heart of the kibbutz was tested during the horrific massacre of October 7, 2023, which claimed the lives of fifteen residents and workers and left the community shattered and depopulated. While many families are currently living in temporary housing in Omer, the "yearning" that gave the kibbutz its name is now fueling a courageous homecoming; as of early 2025, a dedicated group has returned to reopen the kindergarten and begin a massive NIS 20 million reconstruction effort. Your support is the bridge that will help Kissufim build 25 new homes and provide the security and social services needed to turn these ruins back into a thriving home for the next generation.
