Nestled on 8,500 dunams of the northwestern Negev, Kibbutz Magen is a place where layers of history meet the future of renewable energy. Established in 1949 by Romanian immigrants on the site of a WWI British airbase, the grounds hold the ancient secrets of the Sheikh Nuran shrine and Byzantine-era mosaics. Today, Magen is celebrated globally for its solar panel manufacturing and its bountiful harvests of avocados and peanuts. The strength of this community was tested on October 7, 2023, when militants breached the perimeter fence, forcing the local civil defense team into a desperate, hours-long battle to protect their neighbors. Though the kibbutz suffered the tragic loss of two members and was temporarily evacuated to the Dead Sea, its residents refused to remain displaced, becoming the first Israeli community to return and reclaim their way of life.
