Kibbutz Re'im
Born from the visionary ideals of Scout pioneers and Palmach veterans, Kibbutz Re’im is a "Hill of Friends" in the northwestern Negev that made history as the world’s first community fully powered by solar energy. On October 7, this sanctuary of sustainability and modern design became the site of unimaginable tragedy during the Nova music festival, but today, your support is the critical spark that helps these resilient "friends" rebuild their solar-powered future and heal their vibrant community.
A Hill of Friends and Light
Pioneers of Sustainability and Communal Strength
Established in 1949 at the confluence of the Besor and Gerar streams, Kibbutz Re’im—meaning "Friends"—is a testament to the pioneering spirit of the Israel Boy and Girl Scouts Federation. Designed by architect Hanan Havron with a unique, minimalist aesthetic, the kibbutz evolved from a frontier outpost into a global leader in green technology. In 2008, it launched a groundbreaking solar power project, making it the first community in the world to be entirely powered by the sun for domestic use. This commitment to the environment and its historic location near the ancient ruins of Tell Jemmeh has made Re’im a beacon of progress and deep-rooted history in the Eshkol Regional Council.
The light of Re’im was momentarily eclipsed on October 7, 2023, when the kibbutz and the surrounding festival grounds were overrun during a massive terror infiltration. The community suffered heartbreaking losses, and survivors were forced to evacuate, first to Eilat and then to Tel Aviv, leaving their solar-powered homes silent for the first time in decades. However, the "yearning" for home remains unshakeable; the residents are already in the process of a determined return, focusing on the destruction and reconstruction of their neighborhoods. By partnering with Re’im, you are supporting the psychological rehabilitation of the survivors and the physical rebuilding of a community that has always looked toward a brighter, more sustainable future.
