Kibbutz Holit
Originally founded in the sun-drenched sands of the Sinai before being reborn in its current home in 1982, Kibbutz Holit is an intimate, resilient community in the Hevel Shalom region where a small population of pioneers has spent decades turning desert dunes into a vibrant life of agriculture and kinship. The horrific events of October 7 saw this peaceful enclave become the site of a devastating massacre that claimed thirteen lives, yet the extraordinary bravery of the Caracal Battalion’s all-female tank crew in recapturing the grounds has ignited a fierce spirit of restoration; your support today is a vital investment in helping this "dune" rise once more and ensuring its survivors have the resources to heal and rebuild.
Life Born from the Dunes
A Legacy of Peace and Tenacity
Named for the dunes that define its landscape, Kibbutz Holit embodies the complex history of the region; first established in 1978 near Yamit, it was moved and re-founded in its current location as a direct result of the 1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty. Today, this community of roughly 250 residents sits in the southwest corner of Israel, part of the Eshkol Regional Council, where it has long flourished as a close-knit agricultural center. Its history is one of displacement turned into a flourishing permanence, making it a profound symbol of the Israeli spirit of starting anew.
The quiet life of Holit was shattered on October 7, 2023, during a brutal infiltration that left the community reeling from the loss of eleven members and two migrant workers, including American citizens. The battle to save the kibbutz became a historic turning point when an all-female tank platoon from the Caracal Battalion arrived, engaging in a fierce firefight to reclaim the gates and protect the remaining families. By twinning with or donating to Holit, you are standing with a community that refuses to be defined by tragedy, providing the critical funds needed for trauma counseling, physical reconstruction, and the security of a town that has twice built its life from the sand.
