Kibbutz Sa'ad

Founded in 1947 by the pioneering Bnei Akiva movement, Sa'ad is a rare and thriving religious kibbutz that blends traditional Hebrew agriculture with a deep-rooted commitment to the spiritual and social ideals of the Negev. While the community famously repelled invaders during the 1948 War of Independence, the tragic events of October 7, 2023, have cast a modern shadow over the region, cementing the kibbutz's status as a resilient, multi-generational bastion of faith and endurance on Israel’s southern frontier.

Resilience in the Religious Heart of the Negev

From Tower and Stockade to Modern Guardian of the Southern Frontier

Kibbutz Sa'ad stands as a unique cultural landmark in the northwestern Negev, distinguished as the first religious kibbutz established by native-born Israelis (Sabras) in 1947. Founded by the Bnei Akiva movement just before the War of Independence, the community was built using the "tower and stockade" method to secure the territory. Today, it remains a thriving hub of modern agriculture and industry, where the daily rhythms of traditional Jewish observance are woven into the communal lifestyle. Despite being almost entirely leveled by the Egyptian army in 1948, the members' unwavering dedication to the land has allowed the kibbutz to grow into a multi-generational home for over a thousand residents, centered around the "Ma'oz Mul 'Aza" museum which chronicles its storied past.

The events of October 7, 2023, added a somber and heroic new chapter to the history of the kibbutz. Situated in the immediate vicinity of the Gaza border, Sa'ad found itself on the front lines of the massive surprise attack launched by Hamas. While the kibbutz's own security team and responding forces successfully prevented a full-scale massacre within its perimeter—sparing it from the total devastation seen in neighboring communities—the day left an indelible mark on the town’s psyche. The impact of the conflict forced a temporary evacuation of its population, transforming this peaceful religious enclave into a symbol of national endurance as it navigates the complexities of life under fire while maintaining its commitment to the soil of the Negev.
