Kibbutz Sufa

Established in 1982 by resilient pioneers who were evacuated from the Sinai for the sake of peace, Kibbutz Sufa—meaning "Storm"—is a spirited community that has turned the harsh dust of the northwestern Negev into a blossoming desert garden. During the harrowing onslaught of October 7, the kibbutz was a critical battleground where a tiny group of residents held the line against fifty attackers for six hours until an all-female tank platoon made history by charging into the fray to secure the village; today, your partnership helps this small, brave community rebuild their homes and heal the "Storm" of trauma left in the wake of their incredible stand.

Rising from the Dust

An Inspiration of Peace and Tenacity

Kibbutz Sufa’s story is one of literal "Resurrection" and movement. Originally founded in the Sinai Peninsula, the community relocated to the Hevel Shalom area in 1982 following the peace treaty with Egypt, bringing with them a name that honors the fierce dust storms of their original home. Today, the kibbutz is known for its lush gardens and the "Dangur" memorial, which commemorates the fallen soldiers and pioneers who defended this exact patch of land since 1946. It is a community of just over 200 people, defined by their commitment to the desert and their deep historical roots.

The events of October 7, 2023, brought a new "storm" to Sufa’s gates. Approximately 50 terrorists breached the perimeter, but they were met by a heroic six-person civilian security team that engaged in a desperate door-to-door battle for six hours. The tide finally turned when the all-female tank crews of the Caracal Battalion—in the first instance of women tankers in world history engaging in active battle—raced across civilian roads to intercept the attackers and reclaim the kibbutz. Though the battle was won, the village lost three cherished residents and suffered immense damage. By twinning with or donating to Sufa, you are supporting a community of 220 people as they repair their homes and provide long-term trauma care for the children who survived the siege, ensuring the "Storm" never eclipses their light.
