Kibbutz Alumim
Founded in 1966 by Bnei Akiva members, Alumim is a serene religious kibbutz in the northwestern Negev that has long balanced traditional agricultural life with a deep-seated commitment to Zionist values. This peace was shattered during the October 7 Hamas attacks, when the community became a site of profound tragedy as twenty-two international agricultural workers were murdered and several others were taken hostage.
Faith and Furrows in the Negev
A Religious Collective Defined by Tradition and the Scars of Conflict
Established in 1966 by the Bnei Akiva movement, Kibbutz Alumim stands as a bastion of religious Zionism in the northwestern Negev. Located just a few kilometers from the Gaza border, this collective community thrives on a sophisticated agricultural economy, producing everything from carrots and potatoes to dairy products. Despite the harsh desert environment, the kibbutz has cultivated a lush, communal atmosphere where modern technology meets strict religious observance, creating a unique social fabric for its approximately 550 residents who call the Sdot Negev Regional Council home.
The tranquility of this agricultural haven was irrevocably altered on October 7, 2023, during a coordinated attack by Hamas militants. While the kibbutz’s local security team and responding soldiers fought a desperate battle to defend the residential areas, the community’s international workforce bore a catastrophic toll; twenty-two workers from Thailand and Nepal were tragically murdered in their living quarters, and others were taken hostage. The death of Nepali student Bipin Joshi, later confirmed in 2025, remains a poignant symbol of the global reach of the violence that day, leaving Alumim to navigate a difficult path of mourning and rebuilding in the shadow of the Gaza Strip.

Twinned with the Shtiebel of Lower Merion (Pennsylvania, USA)
Fueled by the generous support of the Shtiebel of Lower Merion and the coordination of the Sdot Negev Regional Council, Magen 48 delivered crucial first response and civil defense training. This intensive program fundamentally empowered the resilient citizens of Alumim to protect their community against any future threat. Today, Alumim stands not just rebuilt, but reborn—vigilant and prepared to defend its peaceful way of life.
